Exercise 50 Page 197

The median is the same for all options.

H

Practice makes perfect
We can answer the question by finding the mean and the median for all five data sets.

Median

All five data sets are presented in increasing order, and for all five sets the number in the middle is 6. The median for all five data sets is 6.

Mean

Let's find the mean for the data sets. Since there are five numbers in each set, to find the mean we need to divide the sum of the numbers by 5.

Option Sum Mean
F 4+5+6+7+8=30 30/5=6
G 4+6+6+6+8=30 30/5=6
H 4+5+6+7+9=31 31/5=6.2
J 3+5+6+7+8=29 29/5=5.8
K 2+6+6+6+6=26 26/5=5.2

For only one data set the mean is greater than the median. The correct answer is H.
