Exercise 23 Page 141

400

Practice makes perfect
In the percent proportion, the ratio of the part a to the whole b is equal to the percent p written as a fraction. a/b=p/100 Given any two of these three variables, we can find the third one. In this exercise, we are given the values p= 20 and a= 80, and we are looking for the value of b.
a/b=p/100
80/b=20/100
80/b=1/5
80=1/5 * b
80=b/5
400 = b
b=400
This means that 80 is 20 % of 400.
