Exercise 68 Page 86

How can we isolate b on the left-hand side?

b=1.7

Practice makes perfect
To solve the equation, we have to isolate b on one side of the equation. By dividing both sides of the equation by 5, we can remove the coefficient from b.
5b=8.5
5b/5=8.5/5
b=8.5/5
b=1.7
To check that we have the correct solution, we can substitute b=1.7 into the original equation.
5b=8.5
5* 1.7? =8.5
8.5=8.5
Since both sides are equal, we can conclude that b=1.7 is the correct solution.
