Exercise 41 Page 85

Isolate k on the left-hand side.

k=-17

Practice makes perfect

To solve the equation we have to isolate k on one side of the equation. We can start by multiplying both sides by 4.

k/4=-17/2
k/4* 4=-17/2* 4
k=-17/2* 4
k=-17 * 4/2
k=- 17 * 2
k=- 34

k=-34 is the solution to the equation. We can check our solution by substituting this value into the original equation and simplifying.

k/4=-17/2
-34/4? =-17/2
-17/2? =-17/2
-17/2=-17/2

Because the left and right-hand sides are equal, we know that k=- 17 is the correct solution.
