Exercise 16 Page 85

How can you isolate k on one side?

k=-20

Practice makes perfect

To solve the equation we have to isolate k on one side. By subtracting 3 from both sides, we can cancel out the 3 and isolate k.

- 17=3+k
- 17-3=3+k-3
- 17-3=k+3-3
-20=k
k=-20

Therefore, k=-20 is the solution to the equation. To check that we have the correct solution, we can substitute k=-20 into the original equation and simplify.

- 17=3+k
- 17? = 3+ ( -20)
- 17? = 3-20
-17=-17

Since the left-hand side and right-hand side are equal, k=-20 is the correct solution.
