Exercise 27 Page 85

How can we isolate y on the left-hand side?

y=-4

Practice makes perfect
To solve the equation we have to isolate y on one side of the equation. By dividing both sides of the equation by -7, we can remove the coefficient from y.
-7y=28
-7y/-7=28/-7
y=28/-7
y=-4
To check that we have the correct solution, we can substitute y=-4 into the original equation.
-7y=28
-7( -4)? =28
7 * 4? =28
28=28
Since both sides are equal, we can conclude that y=-4 is the correct solution.
