Exercise 23 Page 85

How can you isolate q on one side?

q=2

Practice makes perfect

To solve the equation we have to isolate x on one side. By adding 11 to both sides, we can cancel out the - 11 and isolate q.

q-11=-9
q-11+11=-9+11
q-11+11=11+(-9)
q-11+11=11-9
q=2

We find q=2 is the solution to the equation. To check that we have the correct solution, we can substitute q=2 into the original equation and simplify.

q-11=-9
2-11? =-9
-9=-9

Since the left-hand side and right-hand side are equal, q=2 is the correct solution.
