Exercise 22 Page 85

Isolate y on one side of the equation.

56

Practice makes perfect

To solve the equation, we have to isolate y on one of the sides. By adding 19 to both sides, we are using the Addition Property of Equality to isolate y.

y-19=37
y-19+ 19=37+ 19
y=56

We find y=56 is the solution to the equation. To check that we have the correct solution, we can substitute y=56 into the original equation and simplify.

y-19=37
58-19? =37
37=37 ✓

Since the left-hand side and right-hand side are equal, y=56 is the correct solution.
