Exercise 45 Page 9

How can you manipulate Equation 1 so that it becomes Equation 2?

Multiplication Property of Equality.

Practice makes perfect
Let's think about the x-term on the left-hand side in both equations. In Equation 1, we have x. In Equation 2, we have 4x. This means that we can multiply the x-term in Equation 1 by 4 to make it equal to the x-term in Equation 2. x * 4 = 4x Let's check to see if multiplying all of Equation 1 by 4 makes it equivalent to Equation 2.
x - 1/2 = x/4+3
(x - 1/2)4 = (x/4+3)4
4x - 4/2 = 4x/4+12
4x-2=x+12
Multiplying Equation 1 by 4 did, in fact, make it equivalent to Equation 2. Therefore, we used the Multiplication Property of Equality.
