Exercise 55 Page 10

How does the area of the base help you to find the volume of a cone?

B=9Ï€m^2

Practice makes perfect

To find the volume of a cone, we use the following formula. V=1/3π r^2hIn this formula, r is the radius of the cone's base and h is the cone's height. The area of a circle can be calculated with the expression π r^2. If we call this area B, we can substitute π r^2 with B in the volume formula for a cone. V=1/3 π r^2h ⇒ V=1/3 Bh We are given the volume V= 15πm^3 and the height h= 5m of a cone. By substituting these values into our equation, we will be able to use inverse operations to determine the value of B.

V=1/3Bh
15Ï€=1/3B( 5)
45Ï€=B( 5)
9Ï€=B
B=9Ï€

The area of the base B is 9Ï€ square meters.
