a We are presented with the following circle graph showing the percents of different animals sold at a pet store in 1 year.

Since the graph shows all of of the animals sold at the pet store, we know that that it represents 100 % of the animals.

Keep in mind that whenever we have the entirety of something, it means we have 100 % of it.
b Let's take a look at the equation.

7 + 9+ 5+48+x=100 The left-hand side of the equation represents the sum of the percentages of all the animals sold in the pet store. The sum is equal to 100, since the 5 different kinds of animals make up 100 % of the animals sold at the pet store. 7_(Bird) + 9_(Rabbit)+ 5_(Hamster)+48_(Dog)+x_(Cat)=100_(All animals)

If we wanted to find the percent of cats sold, we would need to solve the above equation for x.
