The left-hand side of the equation represents the sum of the percentages of all the animals sold in the pet store. The sum is equal to 100, since the 5 different kinds of animals make up 100 % of the animals sold at the pet store.
7_(Bird) + 9_(Rabbit) + 5_(Hamster) + 48_(Dog) + x_(Cat) = 100_(All animals)
If we wanted to find the percent of cats sold, we would need to solve the above equation for x.
