Exercise 52 Page 10

Think about going to a movie or a theater.

Example Problem: Buying tickets for an event
Solution: 6 tickets

Practice makes perfect
We are asked to write a real-life problem modeled by the following equation. 5x=30

If we let $ 5 be the price of a ticket to a show and x be the number of people going, 5 * x=5x represents the total price for all the tickets. Now, since we are modeling the equation, the total cost of the tickets must equal $ 30. We are ready to write our problem.

We are buying tickets for a group of friends. Each ticket costs $5 and altogether we paid $30. How many tickets did we buy?

Let's solve the equation by isolating x.
5x=30
5x/5=30/5
x=6
We bought 6 tickets to the show. Keep in mind this is just one possibility for this problem.
