Exercise 38 Page 195

What does it mean when an equation has only one variable term?

Practice makes perfect
We are asked to graph an equation with only one variable term. This means that the graph will either be horizontal or vertical. To graph it, let's first rewrite the given equation in standard form, Ax+ By= C. x=3 ⇔ 1x+ 0y= 3

Let's use this equation and substitute some values for y. Doing so will generate some coordinate pairs for us to use in our graph.

y 1x+0y=3 Simplify (x,y)
- 2 1x+0( - 2)=3 x=3 (3, - 2)
0 1x+0( 0)=3 x=3 (3, 0)
2 1x+0( 2)=3 x=3 (3, 2)

Now we will plot these points and connect them with a line to form our graph.
