a The slope of a line can be found using the Slope Formula.

m=rise/run=y_2- y_1/x_2- x_1 When we consider the y-axis, we can see that the run is 0 because it is a vertical line. m=y_2- y_1/0 As we can see, in order to calculate the slope we have to divide by zero. However, this operation is undefined, so the slope itself must be undefined.

b We can think of the y-axis as a vertical line such that all of the x-values of the points on the line are 0. Therefore, the equation of the x-axis can be written as x=0.
