Exercise 31 Page 189

Substitute the slope and y-intercept into the slope-intercept form.

Practice makes perfect
Lines written in slope-intercept form follow a certain format. y= mx+ b In this form, m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. By substituting m= - 5 and b= 0 above, we can write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form.

y= - 5x+ 0 To find another point through which the graph passes, we will use the slope. If we rewrite the slope m= - 5 as a fraction, it becomes - 51. m=rise/run ⇒ m=- 5/1 Since we know that the equation intercepts the y-axis at (0, 0), we will travel 1 step to the right and 5 steps down from there. Finally, we draw a line that passes through the points.
