Make a function table to obtain ordered pairs.
To graph the function y=- 0.25x+4, we will follow two steps.
Let's do these things one at a time.
To make a function table, we will select some values of $x$ which will be part of our domain. Then, we will substitute these values for $x$ to find the corresponding values of $y.$ These $x\text{-}$ and $y\text{-}$values will create a set of ordered pairs.
| $x$ | $\N 0.25x+4$ | $y$ | $(x,y)$ |
|---|---|---|---|
| $\colIII{\N 4}$ | $\N 0.25(\colIII{\N 4})+4$ | $\col{5}$ | $(\colIII{\N 4},\col{5})$ |
| $\colIII{\N 2}$ | $\N 0.25(\colIII{\N 2})+4$ | $\col{4.5}$ | $(\colIII{\N 2},\col{4.5})$ |
| $\colIII{0}$ | $\N 0.25(\colIII{0})+4$ | $\col{4}$ | $(\colIII{0},\col{4})$ |
| $\colIII{2}$ | $\N 0.25(\colIII{2})+4$ | $\col{3.5}$ | $(\colIII{2},\col{3.5})$ |
We found four ordered pairs that lie on the graph of our function.
Next, we will graph the ordered pairs and connect them with a straight line.
The line is the complete graph of the function. The ordered pairs corresponding to any points on the line are solutions of the equation $y=\N 0.25x+4.$
