Exercise 60 Page 57

Use mental math to guess the starting value for the table.

Between 5 and 6.

Practice makes perfect
Consider the given equation. 17=6+2x

This is not the easiest thing to calculate in our heads. Let's solve this equation using a table. In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 17=2x. What multiplied by 2 would get us close to 17? 8 or 9 would be equally valid, so we can start the table from there.

x 6+2x =
9 6+2 (9) 24
8 6+2 (8) 22
7 6+2 (7) 20
6 6+2 (6) 18
5 6+2 (5) 16

Since our equation is 17=6+2x and 16<17<18, we know that the solution must lie between 5 and 6. 5
