In order to translate the given sentence into an equation, we need to look at each of the key phrases. From the last part of the sentence, ...is 8 , we know that something should be equal to 8.

...=8 The phrase that comes before is 8 tells us what should be on the left-hand side of the equation. The sum of 4x and - 3 means that we should add the variable term 4x and - 3. The sum of 4xand -3is8. 4x + (-3)=8
