Exercise 40 Page 57

Use mental math to guess the starting value for the table.

-2

Practice makes perfect
We want to use a table to solve the given equation.

0=4+2y In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 0=2y. What multiplied by 2 would get us close to 0? 0 is a good guess, so let's start our table there. We should also try one digit less and one greater, just to be on the safe side.

y 4+2y =
1 4+2 (1) 6
0 4+2 (0) 4
- 1 4+2 (- 1) 2
- 2 4+2 (- 2) 0

We can see that y=-2 is the solution to our equation.
