Practice makes perfect
We want to use a table to solve the given equation.

5x+3=23 In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 5x=23. What multiplied by 5 would get us close to 23? 4 or 5 would be equally valid, so let's try those in our table. We should also try one digit less and one digit greater, just to be on the safe side.

3 5 (3)+3 18
4 5 (4)+3 23
5 5 (5)+3 28
6 5 (6)+3 33

We can see that x=4 is the solution to our equation.
