Use mental math to guess the starting value for the table.
2
12=6-3b In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 12=-3b. What multiplied by -3 would get us close to 12? -4 would, so let's try it in our table. Due to fact that 6 is much bigger than - 3 we should also try two digits less and two digits greater.
b | 6-3b | = |
---|---|---|
- 2 | 6 - 3( - 2) | 12 |
- 3 | 6 - 3( - 3) | 15 |
- 4 | 6 - 3( - 4) | 18 |
- 5 | 6 - 3( - 5) | 21 |
- 6 | 6 - 3( - 6) | 24 |
We can see that b=-2 is the solution to our equation.
