Use mental math to guess the starting value for the table.

Practice makes perfect
We want to use a table to solve the given equation.

12=6-3b In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 12=-3b. What multiplied by -3 would get us close to 12? -4 would, so let's try it in our table. Due to fact that 6 is much bigger than - 3 we should also try two digits less and two digits greater.

b 6-3b =
- 2 6 - 3( - 2) 12
- 3 6 - 3( - 3) 15
- 4 6 - 3( - 4) 18
- 5 6 - 3( - 5) 21
- 6 6 - 3( - 6) 24

We can see that b=-2 is the solution to our equation.
