Exercise 59 Page 57

Use mental math to guess the starting value for the table.

Practice makes perfect
Consider the given equation.

1=-1/4n+1 This is not the easiest thing to calculate in our heads. Let's solve this equation using a table. In order to choose a good starting point for our table, let's pretend that the equation is 1=- 14n. What multiplied by - 14 would get us close to 1? -4 would be valid, so let's try that in our table. We can build the table from there.

n -1/4n+1 =
-4 -1/4(-4)+1 2
-3 -1/4(-3)+1 1 34
-2 -1/4(-2)+1 1 24
-1 -1/4(-1)+1 1 14
0 -1/4(0)+1 1

We can see that n=0 is the solution to our equation.
