Exercise 42 Page 548

Use an extended ratio to write an equation.

15 minutes

Practice makes perfect
To find the number of minutes it takes Jane to do the second leg of her jog, we will rewrite the given extended ratio. To do this, we will add x to each number. 3:5:1:4 ⇒ 3 x:5 x:1 x:4 xNow, we will use the fact that the total number of minutes Jane spends on jogging is 39. This means that the sum of above terms needs to be equal to 39.
3 x+5 x+1 x+4 x= 39
13x=39
x=3
As we know the value of x, we can find the exact number of minutes it takes to do each leg of the jog. 3 x:5 x:1 x:4 x 3( 3):5( 3):1( 3):4( 3) 9: 15:3:12 We can conclude that it takes Jane 15 minutes to do the second leg of the jog.
