Practice makes perfect
We find the perimeter of a polygon by calculating the sum of the lengths of its sides. A square has four sides of equal length. Therefore, if the length of the side of the square is s, all four sides have the length s. If we calculate the sum of the sides of a square with the side s we get

P = s+s+s+s = 4s.
