Exercise 2 Page 367

Recall the definition of qualitative and quantitative data.

Answer: Breeds of dogs at a pet store
Explantation: Because this data set is qualitative and the other three are quantitative.

Practice makes perfect
There are two types of data sets: qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative data consists of nonnumerical entries or groups. Quantitative data is measurable data represented by numbers. To find which data set does not belong with the others, let's determine which type of data they are.
Data Set Numerical or Nonnumerical Type of Data Set
Ages of people attending a concert Ages are numerical measurements Quantitative data
Heights of skyscrapers in a city Heights are numerical measurements Quantitative data
Populations of counties in a state Number of people is a numerical measurement Quantitative data
Breeds of dogs at a pet store Breeds of dogs are nonnumerical entries that can be separated into different categories Qualitative data

As we can see, only breeds of dogs represent qualitative data. Therefore, it is the one that does not belong with the other three.
