We will use a spreadsheet to create a data display that we have not used previously. To do so, let's consider the bi-monthly revenue of a company in 2019.
Company Bi-Monthly Revenue in 2019 | |
---|---|
Period | Revenue (Millions of Dollars) |
Jan−Mar | $63 |
Mar−Apr | $45 |
May−Jun | $33 |
Jul−Aug | $80 |
Sep−Oct | $44 |
Nov−Dec | $67 |
Total | 330 |
The above data could be displayed using a circle graph since it shows data as parts of a whole. But, this would not allow us to include the total revenue. A similar chart is a doughnut chart. This chart uses arcs, rather than slices, and has a hole in the center that allows us to include more information such as the total revenue. To create it, let's transfer the data from the table into a spreadsheet.
To create the data display, we first need to select the data that we want to graph. We will select from cell A1 to B8.
Now, in our spreadsheet, let's go to the Insert menu, then to All Charts, and select Doughnut. It will display the doughnut chart. However, depending on the spreadsheet version, we may need to adjust the title and the width of each arc.
Finally, we just need to add the total revenue. Let's insert a Text Box
in the hole of the chart. Then, with the box selected, we need to type =B9 in the formula bar and press the Enter
key. The total will be displayed. Be careful to adjust the format of the text according to the graph.
We have shown a data displayed we have not used yet. Please note that this is only one of several possible examples.
