Exercise 3 Page 363

Let's use the internet to find some data displays!

Bar Graph

A bar graph shows data in specific categories. An excellent example that can be found on the web is the number of times each soccer team won the World Cup.

Circle Graph

A circle graph shows data as parts of a whole. The circle graph below describes the favorite social media platforms for users in

pie chart of favorite social media in 2012 using the values 4.9 for Facebook, 2.3 for Twitter, 1.2 for LinkedIn, 1 for Google+, and 0.6 for Pinterest

Scatter Plot

A scatter plot shows the relationship between two data sets using ordered pairs. A very common example of a scatter plot shows the number of ice cream cones sold daily and how it relates to the outside temperature on that day.

Stem-and-Leaf Plot

A stem-and-leaf plot orders numerical data and shows the data distribution. Average daily or monthly temperatures is an example of data that can be represented using this type of display. Next, we will show a stem-and-leaf plot that shows the average daily temperature in California in January

Pictograph

A pictograph shows data using pictures. A good example could be the blood type of patients at a hospital.

graph representing how many people have a certain blood type. 10 persons are represented with the blood drop emoji. There are 50 Type A, 60 type B, 30 type AB, and 70 type O

Line Graph

A line graph shows how data changes over time. In recent years, the trend of streaming platforms has increased. Here is an example that shows the number of subscribers of a known platform from to

line graph subscribers

Box-and-Whisker Plot

A box-and-whisker plot shows the variability of a data set using quartiles. It is commonly used to show things such as height distributions, grades, and scores. We will show the box-and-whisker plot that shows the distribution of tickets sold on a weekend for a new movie.

Histogram

A histogram shows frequencies of data values in intervals of the same size. It is one of the most used data displays. Many examples can be found that show data such as ages, heights, and time periods. We have included a histogram that displays the number of deaths and age-specific death rates for people aged and over in the United States in

Dot Plot

A dot plot shows the number of times each value occurs in a data set. However, it is only suitable for small data sets. Below we have an example that displays the waiting times in a restaurant.

Conclusion

Here we have shown some basic examples of the most common types of data displays. However, keep in mind that there are many possible examples. Also, even though there are many types of data displays, some are more appropriate than others depending on the data set.
