Exercise 44 Page 701

Start by converting between feet and inches. You can use a conversion factor 12in.ft for this.

J

Practice makes perfect
Here are the dimensions of a painting we want to dilate using scale factor of 0.25. Width:& 3 ft Length:& 6 ft Let's start by converting between feet and inches. We do it because all the answers are expressed using inches. To do so, we need to use a conversion factor of 12in.ft. It is a ratio of two equal lengths expressed using different units.

Width:& 3 ft * 12in.ft = 36 in. [0.7em] Length:& 6 ft * 12in.ft = 72 in. Now we can find the size of the paper by multiplying the dimensions of the painting by the scale factor k. preimage length * k = image length In our case, the scale factor k is 0.25. Let's find the width and the length of the paper.

Width (in.) Length (in.)
Painting (Preimage) 36 72
Paper (Image) 36 * 0.25 = 9 72 * 0.25 = 18

To be able to replicate the painting, the paper should be 9 inches wide and 18 inches long. This corresponds to answer J.
