Exercise 11 Page 377

Practice makes perfect
a We want to find the number that lies exactly halfway between the two given numbers. Let's calculate the mean of the numbers — the result will be our answer!
Mean=Sum of values/Number of values
Mean = 9 + 15/2
Mean = 24/2
Mean = 12
The number 12 is exactly halfway between 9 and 15.
b Now let's find the middle number, or the mean, of 3 and 27.
Mean=Sum of values/Number of values
Mean = 3 + 27/2
Mean = 30/2
Mean = 15
The number 15 is exactly halfway between 3 and 27.
c Finally, let's find the number halfway between 10 and 21.
Mean=Sum of values/Number of values
Mean = 10 + 21/2
Mean = 31/2
Mean = 15.5
The number 15.5 is exactly halfway between 10 and 21.
