Consider the case when the transversal is EB and when it is AG.

∠ FCA and ∠ HJG are alternate exterior angles.

Two angles are alternate exterior angles when they lie outside of their respective lines and on opposite sides of the transversal. Let's see what happens when EB is the transversal.


In this case, ∠ FCA cannot be an alternate exterior angle because it lies between the lines. Next, we will imagine that AG is the transversal. In this case, ∠ FCA is outside of its line. Therefore, ∠ HJG will be the alternate exterior angle. Like ∠ FCA, it is outside of the line and on the opposite side of the transversal.
