A transversal is a line that intersects two or more lines at different points.
When a pair of lines are cut by a transversal, eight different angles are created. There are four angles around each point of intersection.
The eight angles formed by the lines and the transversal receive special names.
| Name | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Corresponding Angles | Angles that lie in the same position around different intersection points. | ∠ 1 and ∠ 5 |
| Alternate Interior Angles | Angles that lie between the lines on opposite sides of the transversal. | ∠ 3 and ∠ 5 |
| Alternate Exterior Angles | Angles that lie outside the lines on opposite sides of the transversal. | ∠ 1 and ∠ 7 |
| Same-Side Interior Angles | Angles that lie between the lines on the same side of the transversal. | ∠ 4 and ∠ 5 |
| Same-Side Exterior Angles | Angles that lie outside the lines on the same side of the transversal. | ∠ 1 and ∠ 8 |
