Exercise 2 Page 501

Do all of them show a set of corresponding angles, alternate interior angles, alternate exterior angles, or consecutive interior angles?

∠ 2 and ∠ 3.
Explanation: See solution.

Practice makes perfect

Let's start by listing the types of angles that are formed by two lines and a transversal running through them:

  • Corresponding angles are angles with corresponding positions.
  • Alternate interior angles lie between the lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.
  • Alternate exterior angles lie outside the two lines and on opposite sides of the transversal.
  • Consecutive interior angles lie between the lines and on the same side of the transversal

Next, we will identify the different angles in each of the statements.

Three of the statements fit the description of angles formed by two lines and a transversal. The only one that does not fit this is the first statement ∠ 2 and ∠ 3 which shows a pair of vertical angles.
