Exercise 19 Page 17

Make an estimation by using compatible numbers. Find the actual quotient by dividing, multiplying, subtracting, and comparing. Repeat the steps as needed to complete the division.

25 R18

Practice makes perfect
To divide 968 by 38, we first make an estimation. Since 968 and 38 are close to 1000 and 40, these numbers seem good to use for our estimation. 1000 Ă· 40 = 25

The quotient of 968 and 38 is about 25, so the first digit of the quotient will be in the tens place. We calculate the actual quotient by following four steps.

  1. Divide
  2. Multiply
  3. Subtract
  4. Compare
Next, we bring down the ones and repeat the steps as needed until the remaining number is less than the divisor.
Finally, we have that 968Ă· 38 is 25 R18. We know that the answer is reasonable because 25 is exactly the same as our estimation.
