Exercise 39 Page 18

Calculate each division expression in Column A.

Practice makes perfect

We are asked to draw lines to connect each division expression in Column A with its quotient in Column B.

To do so, we will calculate each expression in Column A one at a time. Let's do it!

First Expression

Let's take a look at the first expression from Column A. 634.5÷ 4.5 Before we divide this, we will make the divisor a whole number by multiplying both numbers by 10. (634.5* 10)÷ (4.5* 10) ⇕ 6345÷ 45 Now let's make an estimation. The number 6345 is close to 6350 and the number 45 is close to 50. This means that we can make the following estimation.

6350 Ă· 50=127 We found that the expression is equal to about 127. We can calculate the actual quotient by following four steps.

  1. Divide
  2. Multiply
  3. Subtract
  4. Compare
We will bring down the next digit and repeat the steps as needed until the remaining number is zero.
long division
We found that the first expression is equal to 141. Let's draw a line that connects this expression with its quotient.

Next, let's look at the second expression.

Second Expression

We will calculate the following expression. 1364Ă· 44 Let's first make an estimation. The number 1364 is close to 1400 and the number 44 is close to 40, so we can make the following estimation. 1400Ă· 40=35 We found that the quotient should be about 35. Now let's divide 1364 by 44.
long division
We found that the expression is equal to 31. We can draw a line that connects the second expression with the correct quotient.

We can already conclude which quotient should be connected with the last expression, but let's calculate it anyways.

Third Expression

Let's look at the last expression. 1248÷ 0.25 Before we divide this, we will multiply both the divisor and the dividend by 100 so that both numbers involved are whole numbers. This will make it easier to divide them. 1248* 100÷ 0.25* 100 ⇕ 124 800÷ 25 Now, let's divide!
long division
We found that the expression is equal to 4992.

We connected the expressions with their quotients!
