Exercise 18 Page 17

Make an estimation by using compatible numbers. Find the actual quotient by dividing, multiplying, subtracting, and comparing. Repeat the steps as needed to complete the division.

275 R8

Practice makes perfect
To divide 2483 by 9, we first make an estimation. Since 2483 and 9 are close to 2500 and 10, these numbers seem good to use for our estimation. 2500 Ă· 10 = 250

The quotient of 2483 and 9 is about 250, so the first digit of the quotient will be in the hundreds place. We calculate the actual quotient by following four steps.

  1. Divide
  2. Multiply
  3. Subtract
  4. Compare
Next, we bring down the tens and repeat the steps as needed until the remaining number is less than the divisor.
Finally, we have that 2, 483Ă· 9 is 275 R8. We know that the answer is reasonable because 275 is close to our estimate.
