Exercise 34 Page 18

For each brand, divide the costs by the corresponding number of pounds of fruit snacks.

Cheaper Brand: Brand B
How Much Less? 0.19 dollars per pound

Practice makes perfect

We are asked to determine which of the two brands of fruit snacks costs less per pound.

Brand Cost
Brand A $16.20 for 15lb
Brand B $22.25 for 25lb

To do so, we can divide each cost by the corresponding number of pounds of fruit snacks.

Brand Cost Cost per Pound
Brand A $16.20 for 15lb 16.20Ă· 15
Brand B $22.25 for 25lb 22.25Ă· 25

Now we need to calculate these expressions. Let's start with Brand A.

Brand A

The cost per pound of fruit snacks for Brand A is given by the following quotient. 16.20 Ă· 15

Before we divide this, let's make an estimation. The number 16.20 is close to 15, so we can make the following estimation. 15 Ă· 15=1 We found that 16.20 divided by 15 is about 1, so the first digit of the quotient will be in the ones place. We calculate the actual quotient by following four steps.

  1. Divide
  2. Multiply
  3. Subtract
  4. Compare
Then we will bring down the next digit and repeat the steps as needed until the remaining number is zero.
long division
We found that 16.20 divided by 15 is 1.08. This is a reasonable solution because it is close to our estimation! Now we know that the cost per pound of fruit for Brand A is 1.08 dollars.
Brand Cost Cost per Pound
Brand A $16.20 for 15lb 16.20Ă· 15=1.08
Brand B $22.25 for 25lb 22.25Ă· 25

Now let's repeat this process for Brand B.

Brand B

The cost per pound of fruit for Brand A is equal to the following. 22.25 Ă· 25 Before we start dividing, let's first make an estimation. The number 22.25 is close to 20. Therefore, we can make the following estimation. 20 Ă· 25=0.8 We estimated that 22.25 divided by 25 is about 0.8, so the first digit of the quotient will be in the tenths place. Let's divide!
long division
We found that the cost per pound of fruit for brand B is 0.89 dollars.

Comparison

Let's summarize our results.

Brand Cost Cost per Pound
Brand A $16.20 for 15lb 1.08
Brand B $22.25 for 25lb 0.89

We can see that Brand B's fruit snacks cost less per pound. To calculate how much less, we need to subtract Brand B's cost per pound from Brand A's cost per pound. 1.08- 0.89=0.19 We found that Brand B's fruit snacks cost 0.19 dollars less per pound than Brand A's snacks.
