Exercise 113 Page 589

There are 10 inches left to be filled and the leaking pipe adds 14 inches per hour. Use this information to write an equation containing the number of hours x that the pipe is leaking.

40 hours

Practice makes perfect
Let's start by recalling that 1 foot = 12inches. Then, let's illustrate the cylinder.

According to the exercise, the water increases by 14 inches per hour. If we call the number of hours the water can leak into the cylinder without overflowing x, we can write and solve the following equation. 1/4x=10 ⇔ x= 40 After 40 hours, the cylinder will be full and then overflow.
