Exercise 23 Page 323

When raising a number to an exponent we multiply it by itself that many times as indicated by the exponent.

- 1/729

Practice makes perfect
The expression - ( 19)^3, or negative 19 to the third power, can be written as the product of three 19 terms with a negative sign in front. Note that the negative sign is applied after raising 19 to the third power. - (1/9)^3 ⇔ - ((1/9)^3 )Let's evaluate the expression. We add parentheses to better visualize all of the transitions, although they are not necessary.
- ( 1/9)^3
- (( 1/9)^3)

a^3=a* a* a

- ( ( 1/9)* ( 1/9)* ( 1/9))
- ( 1/9* 1/9* 1/9)
- ( 1* 1* 1/9* 9 * 9)

Evaluate numerator

- ( 1/9* 9 * 9)

Evaluate denominator

- ( 1/729)
- 1/729
Using a calculator, we can either enter - ( 19)^3, or - 19* 9 * 9, or - 1729. All of the expressions give us the same answer.
