Exercise 13 Page 321

When raising a number to an exponent we multiply it by itself that many times as indicated by the exponent.

- 216

Practice makes perfect
The expression - 6^3, or negative of 6 to the third power, can be written as the product of three 6 terms with a negative sign in front. Note that the negative sign is applied after raising 6 to the third power. - 6^3 ⇔ - (6^3)Let's evaluate the expression. We add parentheses to better visualize all of the transitions, although they are not necessary.
- 6^3
- (6^3)
- ( 6* 6* 6)
- (216)
- 216
Using a calculator, we can either enter - 6^3 or - 6* 6* 6, or -(6* 6* 6). All of the expressions give us the same answer.
