Exercise 19 Page 323

When raising a number to an exponent we multiply it by itself that many times as indicated by the exponent.

- 1331

Practice makes perfect
The expression - 11^3, or negative of 11 to the third power, can be written as the product of three 11 terms with a negative sign in front. Note that the negative sign is applied after raising 11 to the third power. - 11^3 ⇔ - (11^3)Let's evaluate the expression. We add parentheses to better visualize all of the transitions, although they are not necessary.
- 11^3
- (11^3)
- ( 11* 11* 11)
- (1331)
- 1331
Using a calculator, we can either enter - 11^3, or - 11* 11* 11, or -(11* 11* 11). All of the expressions give us the same answer.
