Exercise 61 Page 93

Pay close attention to the order of operations.

Practice makes perfect
According to the order of operations, expressions inside parentheses are evaluated first, followed by exponents, then multiplication and division, and finally addition and subtraction are evaluated last. We can use the acronym PEMDAS to help us remember the correct order!
pemdas
For the given expression, this means evaluating the expression inside the square brackets completely before adding the product. 13.41 * (5.4 Ă·9)Following the order of operations, we need to start with the operation inside the parenthesis. This is a division. The calculations are easier if we |multiply the divisor and the dividend by the same power of 10 so that the divisor is a whole number. In this case, we will multiply by 10. 5.4* 10 &=54 9* 10 &= 90 This means that 5.4Ă· 9 is the same as 54Ă· 90. Now we will find the quotient. We divide, multiply, subtract, and compare as many times as we need.
Applet to compute the division of two numbers
Since 54Ă· 90=0.60, we know that 5.4Ă· 9=0.60. Now, we can substitute the result into the given expression. 13.41 * 0.60 To calculate the product, we will multiply just as we do with two whole numbers. At first, we will ignore any decimal points.
Applet to multiply two natural numbers
Then we place the decimal point in the product by counting the number of decimal places in each factor.
multiplication
The product of 13.41 and 0.60 is 8.0460, or simply 8.046.
