When measuring the length of the segment, place the needle point at the first point and the pencil at the end point.

To construct the segment, we will start by drawing a straight line with a straightedge. We will use a ruler as our straightedge

To make the line the same length, we will have to measure it with a compass. Place the needle point on the first point of the segment and then place the pencil at the end point.

The compass is now set to the correct length and we can move it to our new segment. Draw a small line with the pencil on the compass to mark the end point.

The line tells us where to place the end point of our segment. Placing the endpoint is the final step in copying the segment.
