To begin, let's find the distance from City X to City Y. We know that the round-trip distance from City X to City Y is 647 miles. The distance one way will be half of that. XY=647 ÷ 2=323.5 miles Let's draw a diagram that shows the distance between City X and City Y. We can make X and Y the endpoints of a segment, and place Z between them arbitrarily. We can also add the known distances to this diagram.

Notice that the distance XY is the same as the sum of distance XZ and distance ZY. XY=XZ+ZY Since XY=323.5 and XZ=27, we can calculate ZY using the Ruler Postulate.

XY=XZ+ZY
323.5 = 27 +ZY
296.5=ZY
ZY=296.5

The distance from City Z to City Y is 296.5 miles.
