a The model airplane flew from Cape Spear, point A, and landed in Mannin Bay, point C. Therefore, the total distance flown is from point A to point C.

We are given the length from A to B and the length from B to C. Since point B is on a straight line between points A and C, we can use the Segment Addition Postulate to calculate the total length, AC.

AC = AB+BC
AC = 1264+ 601
AC = 1865

The total distance flown was 1865 miles.

b From Part A, we know that the total length of the flight was 1865 miles. The flight lasted 38 hours and, to calculate the average speed, we will have to find out how far the airplane traveled each hour. If we divide the total distance by the total time, we will get the airplane's average speed.
1865miles38hour≈49 mph The airplane's average speed was 49 miles per hour.
