Exercise 24 Page 40

Practice makes perfect
a The penny size d of a nail can be described with the following literal equation, in which n is the length of a nail.
d=4n-2 Solving the equation for n means isolating n on one side. Let's do it!
d=4n-2
d+2=4n-2+2
d+2=4n
d+2/4=n
n=d+2/4
b To find the lengths of nails we can take 3, 6, and 10 and substitute those values for d into the equation from Part A.
d d+2/4 n
3 3+2/4 5/4
6 6+2/4 2
10 10+2/4 3

If the penny size is 3, the length of a nail is 54 inches. If the penny size is 6, the length of a nail is 2 inches. A penny size of 10 corresponds to a length of 3 inches.
