Exercise 46 Page 618

How many cases do you have after you remove the absolute value?

5.4

Practice makes perfect
Before we can solve this equation, we need to isolate the absolute value expression using the Properties of Equality.
- 3.2|t|=- 17.28
|t|=5.4

An absolute value measures an expression's distance from a midpoint on a number line. |t|= 5.4 This equation means that the distance is 5.4, either in the positive direction or the negative direction. |t|= 5.4 ⇒ lt= 5.4 t= - 5.4 Both 5.4 and -5.4 are solutions to the absolute value equation but the only positive solution is 5.4.
