Exercise 164 Page 109

Can you identify the locator point of this function?

y=-2|x+3|+4

Practice makes perfect
We want to write the equation of the absolute value function. To do so, let's first recall the general equation of this type of functions. y= a|x- h|+k In this form, ( h,k) is the locator point of the function. Let's try to identify the locator point using the graph.
The locator point is (-3,4). We can use these values to partially write our equation. y= a|x-( -3)|+4 ⇒ y=a|x+3|+4 Finally, to find the value of a, we will substitute any point that lies on the function into the above equation. Let's try with (0,-2).
y=a|x+3|+4
-2=a| 0+3|+4
â–Ľ
Solve for a
-2=a|3|+4
-2=a3+4
-2=3a+4
-6=3a
-2=a
a=-2
Now that we know that a= -2, we can complete the equation of the function. y= -2|x+3|+4
