Let's illustrate the bent strip of metal.

To create an isosceles triangle, we have to bend the 14-inch piece so that we get, for the whole strip, two sides with the same length. For example, we can bend it to obtain two sides that are 6 inches and one that is 8 inches long. Notice that we have to adjust the angle of the first bend.

We can also bend the 14-inch piece so that two sides are 7 inches like below.
