The miles you are from a thunderstorm are calculated by the seconds s that pass between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder, divided by 5. Let's write this in an equation. miles away=s/5 If a storm is 2 miles away, we can substitute that into the equation above and solve for the number of seconds we would need to count, s.

2=s/5
10=s
s=10
If we count 10 seconds between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder, then, a storm is approximately 2 miles away.
