Exercise 39 Page 15

What effect does adding 0 to a real number have on the number?

Identity Property of Addition.

To identify the Property of Real Numbers illustrated by the given equation, we should first identify the operation being performed. -sqrt(5)+0=-sqrt(5) In this case, the terms are being added and one of the terms is 0. Because the addition of 0 to a real number has no effect on the value of the number, 0 is known as the additive identity. Therefore, the given equation demonstrates the Identity Property of Addition.
-sqrt(5)+0=-sqrt(5)
-sqrt(5)=-sqrt(5)
